Creating GIMP Patterns and Textures: Empowering You and Your Projects!

Why bother looking for GIMP patterns and GIMP textures when you can empower yourself to make your own? After all, the time saved searching for patterns can be spent making sure it meets the criteria of your own projects!

That's why, in just a few steps, you will learn to create patterns and textures in this lesson! As an artist and graphics designer, you need to be able to use your drawing software effectively in the long run as it translates to time and income saved from purchasing extra graphics purchases.

In addition, you will build an original portfolio of ideas and graphical patterns to implement in future projects that syncs with your particular workflow. As a result, you can be positive that a portfolio that contains both quality and quantity designs will bring in more projects (and potentially more income).

To achieve that goal, this lesson will focus first on creating a simple texture that you can assign to brushes. Then, with the same texture, you will change it to create a background pattern.

So let's get started on turning yourself into a desirable artist by learning how to create GIMP patterns and textures!

Creating the texture

As much as I love the default brushes, there will be a time where the brush shape that you want will not be in the default brush sets. To overcome this limitation, you will need to create your own brush shapes from different textures.

GIMP patterns are created in the same way as well. First, you need to create a small canvas about the same size that you want your custom brush to be. The choice is up to you as long as it's a perfect square. This means the width and the length must be the same pixel.

As well, make sure the entire layer is transparent as you don't want to have a solid shaped brush. I recommend creating a new layer and deleting the default background layer. You know you've done it right if the background becomes a checker flag pattern to signify transparency.

From here, you can paint any type of texture you like. You can even use an image as a texture! This particular process is important because it gets you to critically think how the texture will interact with itself as a pattern and as a brush shape. So take your time!

Excellent resource:

Saving your GIMP textures

Once you have made the custom texture you want, the next thing is to save it. To do that, you will need to go to File > Save As... and then choose the correct file type and directory to store these brushes. Of course, you should also name your newly created brush.

Clicking on the File Type option will give you a list of all the file extensions to save as. If you do a quick scan of all the file extensions that can be saved from this, you will notice two particular extensions that relate to the GIMP brushes: GIMP brush (gbr) and GIMP brush [animated] (gih).

Afterwards, you will need to select the file directory to save this brush. Find the directory of where GIMP stores these brushes (as per the information found in the preferences):

C:/Program Files/GIMP-2.0/share/gimp/2.0/brushes

Get into there and then hit save!

In order to see and use the custom GIMP brushes, the final step is to refresh the brush panel . The refresh icon can be found at the very end. It looks like two arrows arranged in a circle.

And there you have it: a custom GIMP texture that can be used as a brush! Now, let's move onto creating GIMP patterns from this texture...

Saving as GIMP patterns

The process to create GIMP patterns is pretty much the same as creating a texture brush. The difference is that you will be saving the texture in a different extension and directory instead!

Again, go to Save As... and choose the *.pat extension instead. This will designate your texture to be bound to the patterns panel in GIMP.

Next, you need to save this pattern in the proper directory:

C:/Program Files/GIMP-2.0/share/gimp/2.0/patterns

Just like the previous instructions, clicking the refresh arrows in the patterns panel will allow the program to use the pattern immediately.

From now on, for any new GIMP patterns or textures you want to create, just follow these simple steps to develop your own patterns that works with your workflow!

It's truly an easy process that will empower you and your knowledge of GIMP to create amazing graphic designs and artworks!

Excellent resource:

Using GIMP patterns and textures

So now that the GIMP patterns and textures are linked to the proper panels, you can go ahead and start using it immediately!

Starting with the texture, you can assign it to any of the standards tools that use custom textures such as the eraser, airbrush, pencil tool, smudge brush, etc.

For patterns, you can simply drag and drop your patterns into your layers panel for it to take effect. It doesn't get any easier than that!

creating GIMP patterns and textures

When it is all said and done, you have learned to create GIMP patterns and textures easily. There won't be any need to waste your time scanning the Internet to find the patterns you like (and may not necessarily work with how you draw and paint).

As well, use what you have learned to grow your confidence and your artistic knowledge in this wonderful program.

The next task is to find opportunities to apply these textures and patterns to your artworks and graphic designs to become a desirable artist that clients can turn to for their graphical needs!
